Lost Your Only Car Key? Here's What to Do

Lost your only car key in Busselton, Dunsborough or Margaret River? Don't panic, and definitely don't reach for the drill just yet. Losing your only car key doesn't necessarily mean an expensive tow truck, a trip to the dealership or weeks waiting for a replacement.

At CRI-key Car Keys, we specialise in replacing lost car keys, including situations where there are no working keys left. We carry replacement keys and programming equipment for most vehicles, allowing us to come directly to you and get you back on the road.

Whether you're parked at home in Busselton, stranded at the beach in Dunsborough or halfway through a holiday in Margaret River, here's what you need to know.

1. You Don't Need an Original Key to Get a Replacement

One of the biggest misconceptions about losing your only car key is that you need an existing key to make another one.

You don't.

An experienced automotive locksmith can create and program replacement keys for many vehicles without having the original.

When you contact us, we'll ask a few simple questions:

  • What's the make, model and year of your vehicle? This helps us identify the correct key and programming requirements.

  • Does your car have a push-button start or a traditional ignition key? Different systems require different replacement keys and programming procedures.

  • Do you have the registration number or VIN? These details can help us identify the vehicle accurately.

  • Where is the vehicle located? This allows us to work out the travel involved and provide an accurate quote.

With those details, we can generally determine what's required and provide a price before attending.

2. A Mobile Automotive Locksmith Can Come to You

If you've lost your only car key, your vehicle isn't going anywhere under its own power.

Fortunately, that doesn't mean it needs to be towed.

We carry equipment and replacement keys for most vehicles, allowing us to complete approximately 99% of our lost-key jobs onsite.

In most cases, we can have customers back on the road within one to two hours of arriving. Some vehicles have more complicated security systems and can take longer.

Whether your car is sitting in a driveway in Dunsborough, a car park in Busselton or somewhere around Margaret River, we can often

complete the entire job where the vehicle is parked.

Could towing the vehicle actually be cheaper?

Sometimes, yes.

Depending on your location and the vehicle, towing it to us may be more economical than paying for a mobile service.

Before arranging a tow, it's also worth checking your roadside assistance membership or insurance policy. Some policies may cover towing costs or contribute towards replacing lost car keys.

We can discuss the available options so you can make an informed decision.

3. Don't Assume the Dealership Is Your Only Option

Modern car keys aren't just pieces of metal. Most vehicles have an electronic immobiliser system that requires a correctly programmed key before the engine will start.

This is why replacing a lost car key involves more than simply cutting a new blade.

Some vehicles are straightforward. Others require specialised programming equipment, security access or replacement components.

And occasionally, we come across a vehicle that other locksmiths won't touch.

A Porsche that travelled from Perth for replacement keys

We once had a Porsche towed down from Perth because the owner couldn't find anyone who could replace the lost keys, apart from the dealership.

The dealership had advised a six-to-twelve-week wait.

Rather than leaving the vehicle sitting around for months, we sourced the required parts within a week and successfully made and programmed the replacement keys without issue.

It's a good example of why it's worth contacting a specialist automotive locksmith before assuming a dealership is the only solution.

Not every vehicle can be completed as quickly, but you may have more options than you realise.

4. Please Don't Try to Drill Out the Ignition!

We've seen people attempt to solve a lost-key problem by breaking or drilling the vehicle's locks.

Unfortunately, this can turn an already inconvenient situation into a much more expensive repair.

Modern vehicles have immobiliser systems designed to prevent the engine from starting without an authorised key.

Even if you remove or defeat the mechanical steering lock, the electronic immobiliser can still prevent the vehicle from starting.

Damaging the ignition barrel won't magically bypass the vehicle's electronic security.

Instead, you could end up needing replacement locks, ignition components and a new programmed key.

Our advice? Leave the drill in the toolbox and call an automotive locksmith.

5. Sometimes Losing Your Keys Is Only Half the Problem

Working as a mobile automotive locksmith around the South West means we occasionally find ourselves in some unusual situations.

One memorable job involved a Holden Commodore that had become bogged on a four-wheel-drive track.

Let's just say it wasn't exactly the ideal vehicle for the terrain!

The owners had also lost their keys, so getting the car moving again wasn't as simple as pulling it out.

We attended the location, made replacement keys for the Commodore and then winched the vehicle out of its predicament.

Not quite your average car key replacement job, but we got them moving again.

It's one of the advantages of having a mobile service that can attend vehicles away from a traditional workshop.

6. What Happens If Someone Finds Your Lost Car Key?

This is an important consideration, especially if you suspect your keys have been stolen rather than simply misplaced.

On many vehicles, we can remove the missing key from the immobiliser system so it can no longer be used to start the engine.

Depending on the vehicle, removing previously programmed keys may be a required part of the replacement process or an optional security measure.

Our approach is straightforward:

If you believe your key has been stolen, we strongly recommend disabling it.

If you've simply misplaced it somewhere and there's a reasonable chance you'll recover it, we'll explain your options.

Keep in mind that disabling a key electronically doesn't necessarily stop its mechanical blade from unlocking a door. Additional security measures may be appropriate if theft is suspected.

7. Getting a Spare Key Made Is Significantly Cheaper

Once we've replaced a customer's only car key, we always recommend getting a spare.

Why?

Because making another key while you already have a working one is generally significantly cheaper than starting from scratch after losing every key.

An all-keys-lost situation can require additional programming, security procedures and labour that wouldn't otherwise be necessary.

Having a spare key is a relatively simple way to avoid going through the same inconvenience again.

And if you're planning a holiday, there's an even better reason to have one.

8. Going on Holiday? Take BOTH Car Keys!

Here's one piece of advice we wish more holidaymakers would follow.

If you're travelling away from home, take your spare car key with you.

But don't put both keys in the same bag!

Keep them completely separate.

If you're travelling with your partner, a friend or another family member, have each person take responsibility for one key.

That way, if someone loses their bag, drops their keys at the beach or accidentally leaves them behind, there's still another key available.

Think about how many people travel from Perth to Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River every year.

Losing your only key while you're hundreds of kilometres from home can mean unexpected expenses, disrupted accommodation plans and wasted holiday time.

This one simple habit could save holidaymakers thousands of dollars collectively every year.

And remember, a spare key sitting in your kitchen drawer back in Perth isn't much help when you're stranded in Margaret River!
